Cutoff: An engineering student consumed poison after his girlfriend allegedly refused to return his money. The victim died while being treated in a private hospital in the city.
Sritam Swain, a 3rd year B.Tech student at Gandhi University of Engineering and Technology (GIET) in Gunupur, and a resident of Paradip area in Jagatsinghpur district, was reported to have loaned an amount of 2 lakh Rs to his girlfriend for treatment from his father.
The relationship between the young couple turned sour after Sritam asked his girlfriend for money. Even the young girl’s brother allegedly physically assaulted the youngster and threatened to kill him.
Sritam, who had been stressed by the problem in recent days, booked a room in a hotel in the Badambadi district of Cuttack town on Wednesday and allegedly consumed poison. In critical condition, he made a video call to his brother, who immediately contacted Badambadi police for help saving his brother’s life.
Acting quickly, the police reached the hotel and rushed the victim to SCB Medical College & Hospital. After his condition deteriorated, he was transferred to a private hospital where he died yesterday.
A case in this regard was filed at the Mangalabag police station. After the autopsy, the police handed over the body to family members and opened an investigation into the case.
A police source said an operation is underway to locate the girl, who is believed to be responsible for the student’s suicide.
